Speech #990113791

Mr. President. on September 12. the Washington Post reported that Sgt. Georg Gaertner of Field Marshal Erwin Rommels Africa Korps surrendered to the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. 40 years after fleeing a prisoner of war camp in New Mexico. According to the Washington Post. he was the "last of 2.000 escaped prisoners of war to be recaptured in the United States." Mr. Gaertner. better known as Dennis Whiles even to Jean his wife of 21 years. deliberately designed his surrender to coincide with the release of his new book. "Hitlers Last Soldier in America." While Mr. Gaertners surrender gained publicity for his new book. it nevertheless reminds us of the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust.
