It is my understanding that the Judiciary Committees Subcommittee on Immigration. Refugees. and International Law plans to hold a hearing on H.R. 822 in the near future. This bill would require the Attorney General to grant extended voluntary departure to Salvadorans who have sought refuge in the United States because of the violence. human rights abuses. and danger in their own country. These individuals would return home when conditions there im. prove. I hope that the subcommittee and full committee will act swiftly on this im. portant bill. As long ago as 1983. Congress passed legislation that included a provision urging the Attorney General to take this action.
