Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990113197

President. the Senator from New Hampshire has been desperately seeking to convince the administration to reopen the case of the Soviet seaman. Myroslav Medvid. who is about to be Shanghaied out of this country. no doubt to his death. In that context. Mr. President. I want to read into the record a document which has become available Just within the last few hours relative to this case. It is an affidavit from Mrs. Irene Padoch. who was the first interpreter retained by the Immigration Service to interview Seaman Medvid. What is contained in this affidavit contradicts the statement of the Immigration Service. It contradicts the statement that Mr. Medvid did not ask for political asylum in this country.
