I am extremely pleased and gratified to share with my colleagues the news that Mark Nashpitz of Moscow. a former Soviet Jewish prisoner of conscience and longterm refuscnik whom I adopted when I first arrived in Congress many years ago. arrived in Vienna yesterday along with his wife and son and has today been reunited with his aging parents in Israel. Marks 15year odyssey for an exit visa was a particularly difficult. uphill battle. since his father had defected from the Soviet Union some 30 years ago. when Mark was just a small boy. Branded the son of a traitor. Marks life as a student and later as a dentist was accentuated by harassment. interrogation. arrest. and two terms of internal exilea total exile of 6 years.
