The recent decision by President Jose Na. poleon Duarte to send his family members to the United States to wait out the storm. dramatizes the fear that so many Salvadoran refugees who have fled their country must feel. We can all understand President Duartes anguish In sending his family to the United States for temporary safety. However. I believe we should also recognize that the Salvadoran refugees who are now in the United States have the same concerns. Therefore. I respectfully urge you to reconsider your stated position against granting Salvadoran refugees extended voltntary departure. Granting Salvadorans temporary safety from the current violence In their homeland would be a great humanitarian gesture. and could very well result in the saving of many innocent lives. Sincerely.
