Do not let the slick style of the new Soviet leadership fool you. Not only does the oppression continue. it is getting worse. From 1968 to 1983. over 262.500 persons left the Soviet Union with Israeli visas. The peak year was 1979. when 51.320 emigrated. As recently as 1981. nearly 9.500 emigrated. but last year the number dwindled to 896. There are still at least 1.8 million Jews left in the Soviet Union. although some Western specialists estimate the number may be as high as 2.8 million.
