I rise to join in this commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus. Twentyfive years ago. the people of Cyprus were freed from 90 years of British rule and 300 years under the Ottoman Empire. They looked to the future with hope. Regrettably. in the years since independence. outsiders have interfered with the fate of that beautiful island. it still does not enjoy the unity and peace that it deserves. We recall with sorrow that in 1974. Turkey invaded Cyprus. 11 years later. Cyprus remains occupied by 25.000 troops. and 200.000 Greek Cypriots remain refugees. This January.
