This matter is of special interest to me as I have worked personally to seek the release of many Soviet Jews who have been denied permission to emigrate by the Soviet Government. The number of Jews allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Union has decreased from a high of 51.320 in 1979 to only 896 in 1984. When Jews apply for exit visas from the Soviet Union and are denird. they are ostracized. publicly beaten. and oftentimes their very lives are threatened by the Soviet Government.
