Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990082406

Mr. President. I oppose this amendment to the immigration bill expressing the sense of the Senate that the English language be the official language of the United States. I wish to take a moment to state why. My distinguished colleague from Idaho has highlighted some legitimate concerns. It is important that all Americans learn to speak English in order to take full advantage of all the benefits that this country has to offer. No one knows that better than I. My father came to this country as a young man. He never learned to write English because he was 14 when he arrived in Albuquerque.
