Mr. President. the legislation must be amended to remedy this deficiency in current law. The Senator from Colorado. along with the Senator from Michigan. offered an amendment regarding alienage discrimination when the immigration bill was considered by the Senate in 1983. Although our proposal was not adopted. a similar amendment was adopted by the House on a 404to9 vote. When the conference report died last year. Senator SIMPSON recommended a hearing on alienage discrimination prior to the passage of a new bill in the 99th Congress. It is the understanding of the Senator from Colorado that such a hearing was scheduled for the upcoming day or the upcoming week or two.
