Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990081949

But we have an obligation first to the people of the United States. the people who we were elected to represent. People who enter the United States illegally have broken the law. and increasingly we find that when they take jobs. they take them from Americans. The workplace for the illegal alien is no longer limited to the lettuce fields or fruit orchards of the San Joaquin Valley in California. There is evidence of illegals working in factory jobs and other positions that have little relation to the low pay and poor conditions of many of agricultural jobs that have been the mainstay of the illegal work force. This Senators view is that even with the recent dip in the unemployment rate. too many Americans. especially young Americans. are out of work. and that it is fundamentally unfair for people who have broken our laws and entered the United States illegally to hold a job at the expense of an American.
