Alabama is also developing a large blueberry industry. Blueberries. too. are a very perishable crop. All of these crops are very labor intensive. Thus Alabama farmers are dependent upon both a local work force plus a migrant work force which originates in Florida and works its way up the east coast. As Alabama becomes more and more industrialized. the local work force available to these fruit growers will decline and they will grow increasingly dependent on migrant workers. If these farmers do not have access to a highly flexible. readily available foreign work force. I am afraid that they will eventually face economic disaster.
