Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990081392

EVANS. and GORTON. I respectfully urge that all my colleagues support this amendment. It has been very carefully crafted to respond to the concerns not only of the sponsors of the amendment. but also those who support it. those who have voiced fears that migrant farmworkers will not stay migrant farmworkers. will slip out of that system and become steamfitters or factory workers. This amendment goes about as far as it is possible to go to accommodate the goals of basic legislation and to save a vital industry that otherwise will be lost to America. What we are talking about in our definition of the workers involved in perishable agriculture is limited to those who will be involved in the actual cultivation and harvest.
