We considered the perceptive. interesting proposals of the able former Senator from Kentucky. Dee Huddleston. who worked like a Trojan on this issue for many years before I came to this place. His efforts are displayed in this bill. And then the efforts of my colleague from Massachusetts. who indeed deserves special recognition. We also had access to the excellent ideas of the Reagan Task Force on Immigration headed by a most capable and knowledgeable former Attorney General. William French Smith. who became a fine friend and ally in the causeindeed a close friend. I admire the many times that he assisted me. as did the Vice President of the United States.
