On August 1. a hearing was held by the other body on this treaty supplement which would completely eliminate the political offense clause from our mutual extradition treaties. The primary effect of this action would be to deny political refugees from Northern Ireland the right to seek asylum and protection in the United States. The political offense clause happens to be the cornerstone of extradition treaties both in the United States and in Great Britain. It is also disturbing that our State Department intends to negotiate similar treaties with other nations as well.
