My legislation ensures that the sponsor. and not the American taxpayers. provide a minimum standard income for aliens. Mr. Speaker. we are a nation of immigrants. who over the years have sought out a life in the United States where many free. doms and opportunities are available that do not exist elsewhere in the world. We have an obligation to accept a legislatively mandated number of immigrants to our Nation each year who have legally applied and followed proper procedures. We. however. have no obligation to grant amnesty or benefits to any aliens who have come to our shores illegally. As a representative of the State of Florida. I am well aware of the burdens that have been placed upon the State. country and local governments by the influx of illegal immigrants over the years. These aliens should not be rewarded while millions of other people patiently wait many years for their time to come when they can apply for and receive permission to emigrate to our Nation. It is for these people that we must provide a fair. sensible and comprehensive immigration policy. one that I hope Congress will formulate in the coming months and that will reflect the concerns I have expressed over the years.
