Mr. Speaker. migrant farmworkers are among the most vulnerable workers in our Nation. Low and unstable family income. hazardous working conditions. unsanitary living conditions. the transient nature of their lives. and limited health and social services have led to high infant mortality rates and a lower life expectancy among migrant farmworkers. The most recent statistics show migrant health to be among the worst in the Nation. The latest available health data for migrant farmworkers notes an Infant mortality rate that is two and onehalf times the national average. Life expectancy for migrants in 1976 was reported to be 49 years23 years below the national average. I would like to commend Molly Moore. Washington Post staff writer. for bringing public attention to findings from a recent report by the U.S. Civil Rights Commission on migrant farmworkers. Her excellent article describes the deplorable and unsanitary living conditions of the migrant farmworker families who harvest the crops on the eastern shore of Virginia. I am submitting Ms. Moores article below in hopes that it will awaken our concern for the 2.7 million migrant farmworkers whose labor contributes to making ours the greatest agricultural nation In the world.
