I would like to take this opportunity to bring to the attention of my colleagues the plight of Soviet Jewry. In late July 1984. the Soviet Union began a substantial crackdown on Hebrew teachers and Jewish cultural activists. They are the major victims of what appears to be an official campaign to stop the current revival of Jewish culture in the Soviet Union. Their only crimeis that they continue to speak out for such basic causes as selfdetermination. freedom of religion. and the right of emigration. To date. I know of 10 of these men who have been convicted. several on trumpedup charges specifically designed to discredit them.
