In 1983. during a visit to the Soviet Union. I had the privilege to meet a number of "refuseniks." Their courage and perseverance gives the world renewed confidence that man is stronger than the state and that faith is stronger than man. Prisoners of conscience like Iosef Begun and Anatoly Shcharansky are testaments to the strength of individual faith. Life in the Soviet Union is not easy for those who choose openly to reflect their religious convictions. Thousands are denied the right to emigrate. Others suffer demotions or the loss of professional careers. Some are stripped of their academic degrees.
