Mr. President. today we remember the people of captive nations around the world. The brave and freedomloving people of Sovietdominated nations have not known true independence for over 40 years. Every day of those 40 years. they have struggled to keep alive their dreams of freedomfreedom which we take for granted: adherence to personal religious beliefs. the preservation of cultural and historical traditions which are centuries old. the right to travel freely and to any land. the right to emigrate to another country. Members of this Chamber speak on behalf of these oppressed people every year. Every year. I am afraid their quest for freedom remains unfulfilled.
