Mr. President. on the weekend of August 24. people from all over Michiganand well beyondwill gather in a modest house of worship in Traverse City to celebrate a remarkable occasion. the 100th anniversary of the oldest synagogue in continuous use in Michigan. It is the synagogue of Congregation Beth El. which was established by immigrants from Russia and Poland in the 1860s and 1870s. These immigrants In most cases were refugees from oppression in their native lands. It was not easy to be a Jew in those lands 100 years ago. Nor was it easy to come to a strange country. and especially to a relatively undeveloped part of the country. a veritable frontier. where comforts were few. and fellow Jews were even few. r.
