President. it is time for the United States to stop rewarding the oppressive. tyrannical regime of Romania with mostfavorednation trade status. The United States tried. unsuccessfully. to affect Romanias repressive policies by giving that government a lucrative trade agreement. This agreement is a great economic benefit to Romania. but after 15 years Romania yet maintains the worst human rights record in the Soviet blocsecond only to the Soviet Union. Mr. President. a few examples of human rights abuses include the mandatory registration of all typewriters. an "education tax" levied on all emigrants. the demolition of churches. and the transformation of much needed Bibles into toilet paper.
