It is important because it is a piece of legislation that will help protect Americans from the most insidious type of crimes. those motivated by a hated of a person because of race. religious. or ethnic background. The type of crime this legislation is designed to protect violates all of our countrys most fundamental rights and liberties. and leaves a stain on our Constitution and the reputation that this country has of protecting all of its citizens. In real terms. these hate crimes leave most of us shocked and bewildered that something like this can happen in America. for America likes to believe that it it has turned the page of history on church burnings and lynch mobs: that this country does not tolerate the vandalizing of synagogues and the harassment of the recent immigrant. Unfortunately. this is not the case. These crimes do occur.
