Ida Nudel. Ida has served as a symbol in the struggle for freedom which the Jews in the Soviet Union continue. Ida was first denied permission to emigrate in May 1971. For 7 years the KGB subjected Ida to apartment ransacks. to harassment. to sudden knocks on the door. Ida reached her limit in June 1978. when. in her frustration. she hung a huge banner out of the window of her apartment which read. "KGB Give Me a Visa To Go to Israel." She was charged with malicious hooliganism and sentenced to 4 years of internal exile. Ida Nudel lived under horrid conditions in the prison camp. She was the only woman in a group of 60 male criminals.
