A paragraph from the Helsinki Watch report illustrates this persecution in stark detail: Over the years. more than 100 people openly became members of the Helsinki groups and their affiliates. Today. 49 are incarcerated in prisons. labor camps. and psychiatric hospitals. or are serving terms of exile. Three have died after years of mistreatment in Soviet labor camps. and one was killed in a car accident under suspicious circumstances. Twentytwo others have been released after serving sentences. but live under the constant threat of a new arrest. Eighteen have emigrated to the West because of the threat of imprisonment. The remaining members have been forced to cease their work. Among the most important of these human rights advocates are the physicist Andrei Sakharov and his wife.
