In my home State of Montana. as a past supervisor of VISTA volurteers. I know first hand the contribution they can make. Montana has had 1.100 volunteers who have been responsible in major part for the first domestic violence project in the State. establishing a network of foodbanks across the State. the first migrant council. the first Indian health care conference. the first group of homes for the developmentally disabled. the research behind the first publicly funded kindergarten. the establishment of the human rights commission. and much more. Across America the need for VISTAs has increased rather than diminished. In January 1981 there were 5.000 volunteers nationwide in more than 900 antipoverty community projects.
