As America recently celebrated its own holiday of independence and freedom. it is especially fitting that we renew our efforts to help those who still strive to achieve these goals. To Jews in the Soviet Union. freedom is a distant dream. Soviet Jews are denied the right to live in the country of choice. practice their faith. and pass it on to their children. And things do not appear to be improving. Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union fell from its high of 51.000 in 1979 to 896 last year. Figures from this year look equally umpromising. Forced to remain in the Soviet Union against their will.
