He is recognized by many of us here in Congress as a courageous individual. daring to defy Soviet tyranny. Dan. a student of Yuli Edelshtein was implicated in the investigations of this teacher. and the Soviets arrested and charged him with refusing to identify himself outside the courtroom during Edelshteins trial. Dan was arrested a second time in January 1985. Based upon letters of appeal he sent to Soviet officials requesting reconsideration of his visa application. Dan was charged with allegedly "defaming the Soviet state and social system." a charge which carries a maximum 3year sentence. He was being held in Butyrka PrisQn pending further investigation and trial.
