Polishspeaking Catholics had to travel to Nanticoke to hear the word of God in their own language. At that time. there were no streetcars. or any other public transportation between the two cities. so they had to walk the distance on Sundays and holidays. With the influx of immigrants to work in the coal mines. the need for establishing a parish closer to the Polishspeaking communities in this area became greater. In 1884. the first meeting was called by the founders of the parish. In 1885 the group celebrated Mass in the German School on the corners of South and Canal Streets.
