I want to commend the leadership for their efforts to bring this bill to the floor today to establish a Commemorative Coin Program to help fund the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are two of our Nations most widely recognized symbols of what life. liberty and the pursuit of happiness are all about. For the millions of Immigrants from all nations who came to the United States. the golden door of Ellis Island. and for the last 99 years the Statue of Liberty have stood as national and international symbols representing freedom. and the promise of a new ife. Today. both these monuments stand as reminders for the millions of Americans of the plight endured to reach the United States. Due to the wear and tear of time and tourism. the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island facilities are in dire need of restoration.
