Mr. Speaker. it gives me great pleasure to rise before my colleagues today to join in celebrating the centennial of Ukrainian Immigration to the United States. This is a matter of great interest to me since a sizable percentage of the population of the Fifth Congressional District of Illinois. which I am privileged to represent. Is of Ukrainian descent. This is certainly a time for all persons of Ukrainian lineage to reflect upon their heritage. Although Ukrainian names were recorded at the founding of Jamestown in 1607. the majority of UkrainianAmericans today are decendants of the wave of immigration that began a century ago. The rich culture that those Ukrainian Immigrants brought to the United States has helped to form and enhance the beautiful ethnic heritage of America today. From Igor Sikorsky. the inventor of the helicopter. to Alexander Archipenko. a sculptor who greatly Influenced the world of modern art. Ukrainian Immigrants and their descendents have shaped American life and society. It is exactly because of the contributions made by this noble group of people. that we Americans should strive to free present day Ukrainians from the yoke of Soviet tyranny. We must preserve the memory of one of the greatest crimes of genocide committed. the forgotten Holocaust of 193233. in which over 7 million men. women. and children were starved to death.
