Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990045518

They have succeeded in their efforts to focus the attention of the U.S. Congress and all of America on the tragic and unacceptable plight of Jews living in the Soviet Union. Last year fewer than 1.000 Soviet Jews were allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Unionat a time when over 350.000 Jews sought to leave. We have all read and heard about the increasIng harassment. persecution and imprisonment of many of these Soviet citizens whose only wish is to practice their religious beliefs in a country where it would not be considered a crime to do so. In the face of statesponsored repression. however. many of these brave men and women continue to express openly the importance of their Jewish culture and identity.
