Mr. President. I wish to pay tribute to Ukrainian Americans who. during the month of May. are celebrating "100 Years of Ukrainian Immigration to the United States." During this month we gratefu..y acknowledge the hundreds of thousands of Americans of Ukrainian descent who have made valuable contributions to the growth of America. The earliest. Ukrainian who came to our Nation are recorded at the founding of Jamestown in 1607 but it Is really in the last 100 years that the majority of the UkrainianAmerican community emigrated. T*krainian immigrants distinguished themselves not only by hard work. intelligence and constructive citizenship. and sense of justice. Ukrainian Americans. while succeeding in preserving their own ethnic heritage. have joined their culture to that of their adopted land and have contributed to the economic and cultural development of America through their participation in thea arts. science. politics. business. and other endeavors. Ukrainians have also served in the defense of American freedom since the earliest of colonial times. Recently. Nicholas Krawciw. who graduated from West Point 10 years after coming to the United States with his refugee parents. was raised to the rank of general. In science and technology. America has benefited from the talents of many individualsfor example.
