Mr. President. my great fear is that the recurring persisting tragedy in Southwest Asia will be forgotten as the publics focus on the 10year anniversary commemoration of the end of the Vietnam war diminishes. For while the weekly periodicals and the daily newspapers divert their attention elsewhere. the plight of refugees in the region continues to worsen. Roger Winter. director of the United States Committee for Refugees. recently wrote an editorial entitled "Remember Laos." The tens of thousands of Laotians who are either huddled together along the Thai border in makeshift camps. or are living in reeducation camps or in intolerable conditions. are our forgotten allies. Many cast their lot with the U.S. Government during the war and for 10 years have been paying the price for their allegiance to freedom and to our promises of support.
