Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990038306

The basic human right to freely express and practice ones religion denied to the Jews in Egypt is lso being denied to the Jews in the Soviet Union today. The situation in the Soviet Union is frighteningly similiar to the situation in Nazi Germany during the 1930s and early 1940s. Flagrant abuses of Jews range from lengthy and unprovoked apartment searches. job dismissal with no relevant explanations. prohibition of Hebrew or any religious teaching. and most of all. the denial of exit visas to the thousands upon thousands of Jews who seek to leave the oppressive Soviet Union. My fellow colleagues. this is not a Jewish issue. but rather. a moral outrage which must be addressed by the Congress of the United States. Moses said to Pharoah when he was asking for the release of the enslaved Jews. "Let my people go.".
