Speech #990035098

Mr. President. I am pleased once again to Join in the congressional call to conscience. As I have previously stated. I think that its absolutely vital that we in the West not forget those who are being abused by the Soviet system. Today. I wish to present three humanitarian casesone involves the cruel treatment of a Soviet refusenik while the other two are family reunification matters. Yosif Berenshtein became a refusenik in 1980 when he applied to emigrate. His home in Kiev was searched on numerous occasions due to his active religious involvement. His daughter. moreover. teaches Hebrew. During the most recent search of his home. 80 Hebrew books were seized by Soviet authoritieo3.
