Mr. Speaker. the plight of Iosef Begun and the toll it has taken on his family is but one example of the persecution and terror facing the Jews of the Soviet Union. Every day we read about some new refusenik who has been denied a visa or who has lost his or her job or has been thrown in jail on charges of "antiSoviet propoganda" or "hooliganism." We have a moral obligation to speak out against injustice in this world wherever it occurs. against whomever it is being committed. and the Jews of the Soviet Union are no exception. Many of the Jews of Russia today are the survivors of or the children of survivors of the victims of Nazi persecution during the Second World War. How ironic it would be if the Jews were to have survived the physical torture of the Nazis only to succumb to the forced assimilation of the Soviet Government. We cannot sit idly by and watch another great Jewish culture and civilization disappear into the darkness. By means of Solidarity Sunday. we reaffirm our resolve to keep the pressure on the Soviets. to let them know that we are determined to help the Jews of Russia to live as Jews without fear of persecution and to be able to emigrate. should they choose to do so. It Is our solemn duty to speak out on behalf of Soviet Jewry. and we can do no less.e
