Hebrew teachers have been convicted on fabricated drug and ammunitions possessions charges. There are now 22 Prisoners of Conscience. among them losef Begun. who is in the midst of a 12year prison sentence. In addition. we must now contend with Mikhael Gorbachev. the new Soviet leader. and gauge whether or not Soviet Jewish emigration is a subject on which we can convince them to change their present. policy. It is because the issue of Soviet Jewry is such a clear one. that the United States and other nations of the Western World continue to speak out on their behalf. We have endeavored to make this commitment known to the Soviet authorities at every opportunity.
