I commend the gentleman from New York for bringing this measure to the floor at this time. On Sunday. May 5. 1985. over 100.000 individuals will gather at Dag HammarskJold Plaza opposite the United Nations in New York City to demonstrate their solidarity of purpose with the more than 2 million Soviet Jews who have been trying valiantly to practice their religious heritage in the face of overwhelming odds and many of whom have been seeking the right to emigrate. House Resolution 127. which I was honored to introduce with my colleague from New York . declares that the House of Representatives supports this effort. not only in sympathy and solidarity with those in the Soviet Union. but with those men and women who will give up their Sunday at home to proclaim to Soviet authorities that their harassment and abuse of these men and women will not be tolerated silently. Under the auspices of the Coalition to Free Soviet Jews (formerly the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry). this will be the 14th annual Solidarity Sunday gathering.
