Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990027253

I voted against the funding bill for the International Monetary Fund [IMF] that provided more money to lend to Communist countries. I have constantly condemned the Soviet Union for its violations of the human rights of its citizens for the 4 years that I have been in Congress. I have written a letter. cosigned by over 100 other Congressmen. to the new Soviet leader Gorbachev condemning the Soviet Unions violations of the Helsinki agreements allowing free emigration and communication. I recently adopted a Jewish family that has been refused permission to emigrate from the Soviet Union since 1976 to help publicize these Soviet violations. Abuses of human rights In antiCommunist countries are not less serious because these govermnents support the United States on -qany isues. Lack of freedom is to be condemned and worked against In Soutj Korea as well as in North Korea. in the Philippines as well as in Kampuchea. in South Africa as well as Iran.
