Mr. President. for more than 50 years. the Selfhelp Community Services Organization has been helping New York area survivors of the Holocaust. This organization was founded by a group of Quakers and immigrant Jews to help victims of Nazi persecution. In the early days of its existence. Selfhelp provided a place for those fleeing the Germans. It was a place to come and seek shelter in a strange. new country. At Selfhelp. these refugees found people with whom they could communicate. The social workers not only spoke German. but also Yiddish. Russian. Hungarian and Polish. The Selfhelp Community Organization provided badly needed services to those fleeing the Holocaust.
