As always. it is particularly difficult to be a Jew in that country. The Soviet regime refuses to allow the widespread practice of Judaism. It closes synagogues at will and confiscates prayer books. It harasses and Imprisons prominent Jewish leaders. Is it any wonder that the pleadings of Jews who wish to leave the Soviet Union have grown? During the past several years. hundreds of thousands of Jews have risked persecution and villification to apply for permission to emigrate. The vast majority have been refused. They remain imprisoned in a land where their faith is oppressed. with little hope of leaving for lands in which religion can flourish.
