Mr. Speaker. today we mark the 70th anniversary of the worlds first genocide in the 20th century. Between 1915 and 1923. 11/2 million Armenian men. women. and children were systematically massacred. and another 500.000 deported. by the Turkish Government. I urge my colleagues to join me in cosponsoring House Joint Resolution 192. to designate this day as "National Day of Rememberance of Mans Inhumanity to Man." so that we may never forget this painful episode in history. On this day in 1915. more than 200 Armenian* religious. political. and intellectual leaders were arrested in Constantinople and in Armenian centers throughout the Ottoman Empire. These pillars of the Armenian community were either deported or taken to the interior and murdered. leaving the Armenian people leaderless and setting the stage for barbaric genocide. In May 1915. the Turks ordered the deportation of all Armenians. In the resulting death march. women. children. and the elderly wound their way across Asia Minor and Turkish Armenia into the Syrian Desert. The Turks inflicted countless gruesome atrocities upon the defenseless Armenians. including rape. drownings. and torture.
