Just a month ago death visited the little village of Chinar in southern Afghanistandeath in the uniform of the Soviet Red Army. Muhammad Gul. a 30yearold Afghan refugee from chinar. recounted in Peshawar. Pakistan. that at 8 a.m. on March 17. Soviet troops attacked his village and perhaps 15 others. "killing every living thing" that could not escape. Gul said that. in one incident. 52 women and children tried to hide on a rooftop. Soviet troops spotted them. however. and set fire to the building. burning those 52 innocent civilians alive when the flames reached the roof.
