Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990016656

To date. $138 million has been raised. but another $100 million is needed. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island have long stood as symbols of freedom to the people. not only of this Nation. but to pr.ople all over the world. First seen by the immigrants as they entered New York Harbor. the Statue of Liberty was a profoundly moving sight. full of the promise of America. a redemption for that painful and perflaous decision to leave their homelands. It was. in sum. a symbol to those immigrants that they had completed their journey to Americaand to freedom. This legislation will aid the foundation in its efforts to raise the remainIng funds needed to complete the restoration. In order to achieve this goal. the charter grants the foundation rights to commercial advertising representing an affiliation with the restoration effort or the foundation.
