Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990016567

As Moscow airs more and more derogatory and viciously untrue programs of this nature. the oppression and violence will continue. and worsen. A second aspect of Soviet antiSemitism that has intensified in a systematic manner during the last 10 years is antiJewish discrimination in university admissions. So precipitous has been the decline in Jewish enrollment that it cannot be attributed to emigration. the aging of the Soviet Jewish population. or any other "natural" factor. Published Soviet statistics show a greater than 40percent decline in the number of Jewish university students from 1969 to 1976. On February 5. the New York Times reported that Aleksandr Kholmyansky. a 32yearold computer scientist in the Estonian city of Voru and a Hebrew teacher who had attracted a wide following among Soviet Jews. had been sentenced to an 18month term in a labor camp on charges of possessing a weapon.
