But the need far outstrips even the generous levels of aid already going to Ethiopia and other African nations affected by the drought. All parties agree that legislation is needed to provide substantial increases in both food and nonfood assistance. I sponsored S. 370 which would provide 1.4 million metric tons of food and transport for that food. and over $175 million for disaster and refugee assistance for the remainder of fiscal year 1985. The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved legislation for $285 million in food aid for fiscal year 1985. and a $225 million reserve of food aid to remain available through fiscal year 1986. It also approved up to $175 million in disaster and refugee assistance. Of course. I am particularly pleased that the Senate has agreed to my amendment to add 200.000 metric tons of surplus commodities to the aid made available to Africa.
