Speech #990013233

In a free society such as ours. there are very few issues that touch us as directly as human beings as the denial of basic rights to those of us who happen to have the misfortune of living under the yoke of totalitarian rule. For several years. I have had the opportunity to correspond with a Soviet refusenik by the name of Leonid [AriJ Volvosky. As a graduate of the Gorky Polytechnical Institutes Department of Computers. he earned a Kanidat degree at the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences. in Moscow. Before filing for an exit visa to Israel in December 1973. he was employed as a senior research fellow at the Moscow Research Institute of Complex Mechanization and Automation In Oil and Gas. After applying. he was dismissed from his position and forced to work at various odd Jobs. Since 1979.
