While it may be convenient for all of us who represent basically urban areas to focus solely on the continuing problems of our cities. I think I echo a wide range of sentiment from among my urban colleagues when I say that none of us herefrom the largest city to the smallest. most rural town or communitycan afford to look away from the burgeoning tragedy within American agriculture today. For many of us who grew up in the West. the ethic of the American family farmer is just as ingrained in our heritage. our lifestyle. and our perspectives as the ancestral immigrant is in our major Eastern cities. Just as we have come to honor our ancestors in the East. so too have we 3874 cc come to honor our ancestors in the Midwest and the Westancestors who were the predecessors of todays American family farmer. To now turn our back on those citizensto let Americas small- and mediumsized family farms disappear from our landscapewould dishonor the heritage of rural America.
