In that year. Ballington and Maude Booth established a Bowery Mission in New Yorks lower East Side that was dedicated to serve the needy. Newly arrived in this country themselves. the Booths liked the new Republic that lacked the rigid class distinctions of 19thcentury England and quickly became naturalized citizens. But as so many people fled their homelands to seek sanctuary in this new land. cities soon became crowded. and living and working conditions became deplorable. Vowing to improve the lot of both the newcomers and their established neighbors. the Booths faced an exuberant crowd in New Yorks Cooper Union and announced the birth of Volunteers of America on March 8. 1896.
